How do you reduce your child's fever without medication?

With the crazy weather these days, it is no wonder our children are more prone to catching a cold or getting a fever! As the age-old saying goes, “When a child is hurt, a mother feels more pain than the child” expresses the same pain we as mothers would feel when we see our child writhing in discomfort when he or she has a fever.

How then can we help alleviate our child’s discomfort?

Step 1: Detecting the fever early.

We all want to be able to detect a fever at its early stages to take immediate action to ease the discomfort of our child, before it gets too serious becoming increasingly unbearable for them. As we all know, there are many means of temperature-taking that can detect a fever – rectal temperatures, forehead surface temperatures, underarm (armpit) temperatures, and most commonly used, oral and ear temperatures.

However, out of these options, the ear temperature is one of the most accurate and reliable, as rectal temperatures usually have temperature lag and have a slight chance for injury to the rectum, oral temperatures are influenced by what the child has recently consumed (a warm or cold drink could affect the reading) and the underarm and forehead temperatures only take into account the child’s skin temperature and not core temperature which is what truly reflects a fever.

The Braun Thermoscan Ear Thermometer available on our website is strongly recommended for the use of young children (even for young babies!) and adults. Widely used by many doctors and parents, the pre-warm tip and guidance system of the Braun Thermoscan Ear Thermometer provides maximum convenience and accurate quick readings in just a couple of seconds! The light and beeping of the thermometer signals to parents that an accurate measurement has been taken. What’s more, if mommies or daddies require close monitoring of your child’s temperature over a few days, the thermometer also has a built-in memory function to do it for you. J

Step 2: Lowering our child’s temperature

Some of us parents prefer to turn to home remedies when our child is ill as we do not want our children to depend on medical drugs at such a young age, while others just need a quick solution but do not have any fever medicine handy. So just to share a few tips on lowering your child’s temperature using domestic everyday items J

Soak socks with cool tap-water and wring out excess water. Use the wet socks to wrap around the child’s ankle until it dries out, and then repeat action until temperature lowered. The same can be done for the neck and head area using wet towels too.

If your child finds having his or her ankles wrapped uncomfortable, helping him take a warm or lukewarm bath can do the trick as well. The damp water helps cools the child and even out temperature abit by slowly bringing it down. Another age-old method would be to “sweat it out”! Let your child wear light clothing to easily sweat out, but if he is feeling cold, put on a thin blanket just enough to warm him up. And most importantly, keep your child hydrated by having him/her drink plenty of water! J

A quote to end off, “Prevention is better than cure”. So always be quick to spot an oncoming fever and lower your child’s temperature before it really hits the high!
