Eczema

Eczema has become so common among young children nowadays. It can affect anyone of all ages and it often causes great discomfort. Doctors usually prescribe steroid medicine for eczema patients but it doesn’t always work for everyone.

What exactly is “Eczema”?

A medical condition in which patches of skin become rough and inflamed with blisters which cause itching and bleeding.

The most common type of eczema is known as atopic dermatitis or atopic eczema. Atopic dermatitis is a chronic skin condition that usually starts from infants and continues to childhood. Some children may outgrow the condition while for others, the atopic dermatitis condition may continue into their adulthood.

Symptoms of Eczema

Eczema always appears to be itchy. And the most common places for the rash to appear are behind the knees, on the face, arm folds, neck, hands or feet. It can also appear in other areas.

In infants, the itchy rash can produce an oozing, crusting condition that happens mainly on the face and scalp, but patches may appear anywhere.

It is often believed that Eczema is a mixture of hereditary and environmental factors. If the child’s parents have atopic dermatitis, the chance of their children having it is higher.

Other environmental factors include:
  • Irritants: soaps, detergents, shampoos, etc
  • Allergens: dust mites, pets, pollens, etc
  • Hot and cold temperatures: hot weather, high and low humidity, perspiration from exercise
  • Foods: dairy products, eggs, nuts and seeds, soy products, wheat
  • Hormones: During pregnancy or some point in their menstrual cycle, women may experience worsening of their eczema.

How to treat Eczema

There is no solid rule on how to cure eczema but rather, we have some ways to share with you on how to manage the eczema condition to prevent the skin from flaring up. They are:

-          Apply moisturizer after bathe daily or as and when required
-          Take warm baths (but not hot baths)
-          After bathe, use towel to dap dry the skin instead of rub.
-          Wear loose clothes
-          Avoid scratching (maintain short fingernails)
-          Change diet (if the child is sensitive to dairy products, nuts and etc)
-          Use organic/natural soap products.
